The demand for Cross Play was already huge before the Switch version even came out. Doubt that the Switch community really had an impact on this decision. |
Well, it changed the framing. Before every console platfrom had crossplay with the platforms of the same manufacturer and PC, maybe mobile. Cross-platform between consoles didn't exist. Therefore in result XboX and PS4 looked the same, as the result was similar. Now with Switch this changed. Now consumers saw for the first time, that inter-console crossplay is possible. Also it made PS4 and Xbox different, as now Xbox had an additional platform to connect to. And it showed in result, that Sony was the one blocking. MS marketing understood the possibility and used it. Don't get me wrong: I think crossplay is something that ultimately benefits the consumer (and the 3rd-party game devs, that make multiplatform titles). But it still was also a marketing battle. One that turned out for our benefit, which is good.
