The simple fact of the matter is that there are no popular trans actors or actresses. Why act surprised when a movie studio casts a popular A or B list actor or actress like Eddie Redmayne, Chloe Sevigny, or Scarlett Johnannsen to play a trans character as opposed to a nobody trans actor/actress who lacks the ability to put people in the seats at the cinema/theater the same way that a A or B lister can? Hollywood will do what makes them the most money. |
You're giving the "star power" thing too much credit. Plenty of movies with big name actors have flopped for one reason or another. Ghost in the Shell, Rough Night and Exodus: Gods and Kings all flopped due to poor word of mouth despite having popular leads, two of those due to a rampant whitewashing backlash it had going in (one such movie featuring Sco Jo herself), so if anything, shoehorning in a white actor/actress in those movies solely for being big names hurt them. Also, GhostBusters 2016 did terrible despite having a popular cast of women for being agenda-driven (read: having a man-hating stigma attached to it) and looking like a terrible movie altogether.
On the other hand, plenty of movies with unknown actors get accolades and make money, that's how we get new stars to begin with. Case in point: Tiffany Haddish is way less popular than Scarlett Johansson, yet Girls Trip made more money on OW than GitS did during its entire run.
Unless it's a pre-transition trans man, casting somebody who doesn't look a smidge masculine in such a role makes zero sense. You'd think Scarlett Jo would have the wherewithal not to take on another controversial role after the last one blew up in her face (ironically by the same director), yet here we are.
