I really don't see how anything in Splatoon 2 levels the playing field like in Mario Kart.

There's no equivalent to the blue shell that punishes you for winning, and it's not like you get better or worse abilities based on whether you are winning or losing. If you're getting consistently beaten it only stands to reason that your opponents are better players and that you need to practice more.

Playing it in exactly the same way as the first game is not the optimum strategy, you'll do better if you learn and master the ways in which the formula has been re-tuned.
