Because Nintendo isn't generous with their pricing model, they could choose to throw the customer a bone considering they're selling an almost identical 4 year port.
They'd rather sell less games at full price, then more at a cheaper price. Because Mario Kart 8 was still going for £45 in the UK, I skipped other Switch games I was tempted by like Splatoon 2 and Arms. If Mario Kart 8 was $30 as a 5 year old port should be, I would have picked up another for Christmas.
