Yeah, I remember reading it in an interview awhile back. As I recall he said he only agreed to do it after asking if he could change some things after reading JJ's script for episode 7. He mentioned fighting to get rid of Kylo's mask because he didn't like it. He said he was surpiused that LucasFilm accepted his requested changes though, so ultimately the blame lies with them for letting him have so much creative freedom, instead of making him follow a predesigned over-arcing 3 movie plot point list created by JJ and Kasdan. 

Well in the grand scheme the mask detail is somewhat minor but boy do I personally wish they'd stuck with it. Kylo just looks and sounds like such a whiny douchebag without it. I mean no offense to the actor but.....you just don't look very evil or intimidating. You look like a black haired, French Anakin.

Generally speaking though, I just think giving a trilogy to 3 different directors - as they had originally planned - is just a bad idea to boot. Different people are always bound to have wildly different ideas for how a story should play out, and you're just begging to run into these types of problems.
