I don't know how people can be excited with hybrid sonic. Bought Colours when it was raved so much, three-lane-3D and sub-par-2D, had to sell it after trying a few stages. Lost Worlds had some curious 2D stages (a bit zoomed out though), but the parkour controls let it down the 3D ones.
Mania is where it is at. We knew this already, thank God for Mania. Hopefully it will fix Sonic Team.
Sonic is about exploration, branching pathways, slow-to-fast sections and not running in a tunnel...
