Exactly. The average person who plays game doesn't know or even notice what fps is. Only people on gaming related websites care.

You don't necessarily have to know to feel or see a difference though.
Sure if you don't have a direct comparison it might be harder for some to notice, but it's still there. Just think about the Hobbit movies that were released with 48FPS in cinemas instead of 24FPS. Everyone immediately noticed that, even my girlfriend who never plays video games, but watches a lot of (24FPS) movies.
