PS1/2 didn't change that though. Console gaming was still a kids hobby with Playstation. Just look at PS1/2-games. The more mature games were introduced by the original Xbox and this path was taken by PS3 and X360 in full.

Eh Snatcher is on SEGA CD and it was a much more gory version of Blade Runner plus nudity and swearing. Also Policenauts. MGS on PS1. Tomb Raider Saturn/PS1,same with RE. Sweet Home on NES. Many games existed before Xbox that were towards a mature audience and the average age of gamers in the early 90s were mid 20s. They already tapped into the mature audience market and with Mature games. SEGA with Night Trap and Midway with Mortal Kombat are pretty much the sole reasons why gaming even has a ratings system. SEGA and Nintendo sat before the United States Senate to debate such a system and these gory and mature games. The mature era of gaming began there.

Yeah, There were single games that were mature. But they also already were on Nintendo systems too. Mortal Kombat is one of the first I think strongly pushing mature content. But the majority of games stayed cartoony and whacky. The major shift came in XBox which first pushed mature content in volumes and PS3 and X360 following in that steps.
