The explanation for not making Zelda the hero actually makes a lot of sense. Its not a question of "what would the man do", it is a question of "if Zelda was the hero, one of the sides of the triforce would become irrelevant"....which would kinda break the purpose of the triforce.
As for the "female link" option, I think the explanation of "why change an existing character" should be fine to sweep that question away. Its up to the artist to create the character they want to create, and the Link they want to create here is male. Maybe that will change somewhere in the future, but if it does, it should be because the artist wants to have a female link for the sake of the game and the story they are creating, not for the sake of diversity.
