That's probably not a good sign.

Edit: let me expand a little here.

I think it's probaby a bad idea for Nintendo to try and reinvent the wheel again. Their hit to miss ratio is way too low and they simply haven't proven themselves to understand what gamers want.

I am well aware of this, I consider myself a Nintendo fan first and foremost but I am critical enough of them to understand that Wii U didn't do them any favors and if NX simply believes that new ways to play is enough to compete against PS4, not so much Xbone, they need to at least make sure their gimmicks don't get to their head or make sure that NX is a console that third parties can't afford to miss out developing for. It's possible to be powerful and new.

The article never said any of that.

Even if the system is as powerful as its rivals, the selling point has to be its new features.  When you're arriving 3 years late, it's not enough to be as good as them.  Has to offer something very unique.  A traditional console at this point would flop hard.

My question is: Do gamers really need all the uniqueness Nintendo tries to sell these days?

As loathe as I am to admit it, they probably do need a gimmick now. They can't compete head on with Sony/MS.

However if the gimmick isn't something amazing, they are then pretty much fucked because like the Wii U they will be stuck with an underpowered console that has very little marketshare.

They've said this is not a continuation of the Wii or Wii U brands, so we'll see what they've come up with I guess. I'm not really holding my breath.

I think when you are trying to force innovation you end up with poor products.

Same here, escpecially when all the steps they are taking (releasing in a timeframe not to compete with Sony/Xbox, showing info on the console outside of a major gaming event, insisting the NX is a "new way to play games") point more toward a console exactly like Wii and Wii U.

Wii and Wii U were different.

NX will be different.

NX = Wii 3

God bless You.

My Total Sales prediction for PS4 by the end of 2021: 110m+

When PS4 will hit 100m consoles sold: Before Christmas 2019
