I felt it was an okay film when I saw the credits roll, a mixed bag on the subway going home, and hopefully the base from which to make new stories once I had actually arrived home. And my opinion hasn't gotten much better since.
Episode 7 isn't awful, but it didn't feel like it was worth watching in theaters instead of reading a plot summary. Phantom Menace wasn't much good, but at least it had some memorable lines, moments, and music. The Force Awakens is the first Star Wars to make me wish we weren't stuck with the current group of characters. Admittedly, part of this was because I wanted to see what horrible things happened to these chumps after Episode 2, but it says something when people care more about the unnamed stormtrooper who swung a stick around than any of the main characters.
