I think it is a combination of the weak dollar, and that it would be the cheapest blu-ray player.
The blu ray association has refused to license out the technology so that other manufacturers can produce cheaper units. They are artificially keeping the standalone players prices high by doing this, of course they say that the real reason is to keep the quality up, but we all know that is their lame excuse. Allowing Sony to sell the PS3 to sell for less than a standalone player would remove any chance of profit from their artificially high prices.
