Favorite: Red Shells. I know how obvious this is, but I really like how they can be used effectively both in defense and offense. And when you're just ahead of somebody, you can keep it behind you and use it to knock them out of the running. The Super Leaf from Mario Kart 7 is also fun to use, since it can be used to both deflect attacks and knock back enemies, but it's probably not coming back. Alas.
Least Favorite: Bob-Omb and Lightning. I have never gotten the hang of using Bob-Ombs. I like explosions, but I never feel like they give me better results than even green shells. And Lightning is annoying due to its combination of affecting many players and being impossible to prepare for or counter. At least the Blue Shell can be dealt with and affects fewer racers.
