I don't know for sure. Probably not a giant screen, but just for rudimentary stuff maaaaaybe a smaller 3-inch low-res, low brightness display for game inputs now and again wouldn't really be the end of the world.
Backwards compatibility I agree is unlikely to be that high on Nintendo's priorties. They need to make sure NX can compete in the here and now, not just satisfying the same group of fans by continually looking to the past.
