To cite pokoko in this very thread: "It will probably sway a few people here and there who need to sell their old console to get a new one but don't want to sell their games. Everything positive adds to the collective appeal of something you spend that much money to buy."
Additionally it may be more convenient to play your old games on your new console. The new console is probably properly attached to your current TV, the older ones may be removed to the attic. Or worse, the older ones don't have HDMI yet, while the new one has. Little conveniences like that can have a big effect.
