Nintendo is steeped in tradition and are very conservative at the base of their beliefs. It's a huge part of what gives them their charm and magic. They won't take that lightly when choosing the next CEO and they shouldn't.
Besides, many of the higher-ups are still there and have been with the company for a long time so I would think they would be the natural choice.
Like you, I am a little concerned about what it could mean for the company, but I know they know what they're doing and will be fine.
It'll be awhile before I figure out how to do one of these. :P
