Minecraft is 3d, yes, but it was also completely new and unrecognizible to anyone (particularly children) when it first came out. Mario is a face that everyone knows, therefore more people will be aware of Super Mario Maker when it launches then those of us (including myself) that played it back in beta testing on pc only.

Minecraft is essentially a level editor. Most people create things so their friends can go on roller coaster rides or whatever. Minecraft can take days and even years to finally finish a project. The 2d Super Mario Maker will have the advantage of being able to create something quickly and share it with the world. It's gonna be popular (a lot more than Minecraft was when it FIRST launched). Whether or not it will be as big as Minecraft long term is something else (I suspect it may, which is the point of this thread) but it will most definietly have a better first year than minecraft.

cant disagree more, there is a vast differnce between creating anything you want in a 3d world and creating a level for a platformer. Minecraft captured peoples imaginations on a vast scale, mario maker will never acheive this.

I guess we will just have to disagree then. What I saw at the Nintendo world championship was some of the most creative thinking I've seen in a videogame.
