To some extent, yes. I think it's a given we'll see multi-team and maybe free-for-all matches in future titles. However, it almost feels like they thought of stuff like this but left it out to have them in sequels as selling points.

The impression I got is more that they didn't initially envision Splatoon being as major a game as it became, so they designed it with more of a Captain Toad/Kirby and the Rainbow Curse level of content and budget in mind.
