I tend to have strong reactions to the show, going in both positive and negative directions. And it's not just seasonal rot. Seasons 1 to 3 episodes were generally better quality than more recent seasons, but even back then, some episodes were unpleasant to watch. Conversely, some of the newer episodes are quite good, like that one based around Spongebob and Patrick just building sandcastles and messing around.

I guess that Spongebob's biggest strength and weakness is that its lack of a proper canon or sense of consistency extends to the episodes themselves. Lots of episodes feel very different from one another, and even episodes that rip off older ones end up being pretty different. This leads to pleasant surprises, but it also leads to my getting disapponted in a new way every new bad episode I watch.

Though to be fair, it's better to become bad due to experiments gone wrong than by being boring.
