I do not believe modern consoles are toys. Nintendo was a toy company and did not fight the stigma that games were toys. When Sony came they changed the face of peoples perception of videogames, hence why the marketshare expanded, prompting Microsoft to join in. They became a visible threat to the PC realm once Sony joined. The PS4, Wii U and Xbox One are no more toys than a gameless multimedia device.
Today games are digital media. Its not cartridge based like the old days. When Sony changed the formatting we could experience games no different than one would on a PC. The difference is the mass market now had a chance to accomplish experiencing such things.

The format of games decide if it is a toy or not?
What do you do with a console? If you only bought a PS4 to watch Netflix and Youtube, then for you it isn't a toy. But I suspect a lot of the purchasers bought it to play games. If you present statistical data though, that people don't use a XBO or PS4 for games, then I agree it isn't a toy.
