If the USB stick states that it's backwards compatible with USB 2.0 then it should theoretically work with the Wii U, but it will only be as fast as USB 2.0 speeds.

USB 2.0 speed is still faster than almost any USB 2.0 stick on the market, so USB 3.0 sticks are still usually twice as fast even with 2.0 ports since they have faster memory and use the full potential.
