Honestly, I didn't find Other M to be as bad as people say it is. It's one of the only games i've ever pre-ordered.
That being said, it's not the best Metroid game. Maybe Nintendo decided to give the franchise a break, so people could start to crave it again. I mean, it's working, isn't it? Up until 2012, I rarely saw anyone talking about Metroid.
