Iwata made it pretty clear in the stockholder meetings this year that they're not going to take on any additional hardware losses for the Wii U this fiscal year. Their goal is to climb back into profitability.
So retailers who are looking to Nintendo to subsidize (read: take a loss) on Black Friday Wii U promotions are probably getting the "no way" message from Nintendo this year.
