Nah, Japan is quite tasteless with the same games over and over. PS1 and PS2 aren't off topic as they are Sony consoles just like PS4 is and there is a tradition at work here. As someone on this website you should have noticed this by now.

Japan has always similar shooters and more and more streamlined action-games plus some sport games? I didn't know! (To be clear, it is always a question of taste, what you define to be similar and how deeply you look into the the market, so the claim Japan has always the same games is pretty baseless.) And PS4 will only as successful as PS1 and PS2, if it does appeal to the casuals as these two did. Think about Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero.
