Why does it need to innovate? Every generation we get an entirely new region, new Pokemon, new moves and abilities, new mechanics, and more. Tons of new content. What's more, Pokemon is the only RPG series that comes to mind with a competitive scene that rivals the sort you see with fighting games, and each generation dramatically shakes up the metagame. I never see people saying Street Fighter doesn't innovate enough? Also the anime sucks. It has always sucked. If there's a problem it's that the anime isn't representative of the games, not the other way around. |
Read the Manga, its amazing.
I'm supposed to be satisfied when they tack on a new region, add more pokemon, new moves and new "mechanics"? I'm supposed to be impressed by Sky Battles, Triple Battles, Double Battles, The fucking beauty contest? How about actually improve on the core gameplay for once instead of adding new sparkles to it.
At the core the battle system has been the same since 1996.
GameFreak will never change the mainline series, and I am fine with that, I accepted that a long time ago. Pokemon is a cash cow and they will never change the formula for fear of losing customers.
My issue is that with the Console games or the side games in general, they will simply stick their foot into the water and when they leave the game out to die they'll abandon it or worse they'll release the game as glorified advertisements.
The meta game argument and competive argument are pointless, people still buy Gamecube Controllers purely for Smash, and regardless of how many times they still try to change that mods will be made Project M to return it to the Melee perfection, but that is besides the point. A good game will adapt a new metagame, if people don't like it they can play pokemon on handhelds, we're talking about a homeconsole pokemon.
They've literally done new region, new pookemon, new moves, new mechanics, every frikken generation, Mega Evolutions and Sky Battles are evidence enough and the X Y naming convention is evidence enough that they are running out of ideas.
But I don't care, why don't they take the series serious for a change and really go outside of the box, Gale of Darkness was so close but it still was just a collesium clone, which is just a clone of the handheld games replacing RPG elements for 3D.
Last time I checked Pokemon isn't a MMO, why would I just be satisfied with new content if the system hasn't adapted to tech that we have today.
The Wii U could easily handle a pokemon RPG with ABS, a story that actually had a writing team on it, some development of the hundreds of pokemon.
But GameFreak doesn't care about the game they care about the money.
Ultimately, the mainline series is a lost cause. That's why for the homeconsole they should actually try to make a decent game that for once, what do they have to lose on the WIi U's install base?
