The GameCube had large hardware/software spikes too, there was a period where it actually outsold the PS2, but all that still only got it 22 million in LTD sales.
The audience of people willing to buy a console without big third party support will always be small unless you have some kind of controller/novelty miracle that captures everyone's imagination to drive sales.
Once the Mario Kart bump passes, Nintendo really doesn't have a lot of big cards left to play. Smash is on the 3DS too.
