But if it wins where we personally live, a local victory where our personal friends and family choose X1 over PS4, then I'll take that any day. Because at the end of the day, I could care less what the Spanish or what the Japanese or whatever prefer. I care about what console people play most where I live. |
You're not gonna be saying that if/when the PS4 presence becomes too great, globally, and the XBone gets left by the wayside. All your friends could have had a OG Xbox (I pick this console because it had a relatively strong presence in America)...but the PS2 selling millions worldwide not only in America, but everywhere else resulted in devs thinking "hrmm, I can put this game on Xbox and sell a few million in America, or I can put it on PS2 and sell a few million in America...and across Europe, and across Asia". And as more and more games went to PS2, PS2 sales increased and conversely less and less games went to Xbox and its sales waned.
You can take the XBone's sales declining and spin it to "oh, so what, I only care about local anyway" (I really don't think this is true. Sounds like damage control to me), but global will affect local some time down the road. What benefit is to make a game for a console knowing the sales of that game will be stymied by virtue of the console it's on only having a real presence in one region? Will the money spent on resources making that version be offset and then some by the potential sales? Or will they forgo it all together and put it on the system that's selling well worldwide and any money from potential sales missed on the XBone are made up for by the lack of making an XBone version in the first place.
This is all speculation, of course, based on if XBone's sales continue to slide. If they spike (and stay there) after they drop Kinect, then completely ignore this post. But either way, "I only care about a local victory" is not the mentality to have, because shareholders don't care about "local victories". They care about how it's doing everywhere. And that will affect what games come or don't come to the console. Which ultimately affects which console all your friends will be playing on.
