Genesis was extremely tough competetion and the market was still small then, it grew a lot by the launch of the 3D consoles.
N64 honestly would've sold 70+ million IMO if it had a CD format or even a CD add-on. It was incredibly popular early on, Nintendo just could not make up for the loss of all those third parties and Playstation surged ahead.
