Assassin's Creed 1 wasn't unfamiliar, that's what I'm getting at. Hence the healthy sales.

Though it was a new IP, people knew what to expect, due to marketing and Ubi's reputation for its flagships.

I see your point. A healthy push it needed to propel a new IP to success. 

Sadly, most new IPs don't get such a push, and as a result are passed over.
