Well Vita hasn't been doing as badly as it once was, but even still...nothing is looking pretty over in japan right now.
Also, I will say that the 3DS is making money, especially with software...releasing new consoles usually results in losses for at least a year or two. Why would Nintendo ditch their moneymaker in favor or losing money when they don't have a successful home console to fall back on? Nintendo will hold out with the 3DS as long as possible.
