Releasing the 2DS did drop the 3D though. As in it is now optional. If the Gamepad was dropped for a new Wii U SKU, the Gamepad version would still exist and be the "main" console. |
Dropping the gamepad now would be near catastrophic. It would completely fracture the market, and as long as the PS3 and 360 are on the market it wouldn't stand a ghost of a chance. Possibly later it could fill the role of the last gen consoles but only after this year.
Dropping the Kinect now would be Catastrophic. It wouldn't split the market as much as the gamepad, but it would probably result in a market wide UI change, which MS has done in the past, but it would cost a lot of money. Furthermore, the X1 would have to compete with exclusives against the PS4, which has the multiplat and exclusive advantage, which is arguably its weakest aspect in relation to the other two. Plus most of its exclusives are multiplayer which depend on XBL subscription, which will actually be a bane to casuals, since they wouldn't want to pay the subscription for multiple consoles, the opposite could apply to PS4 but it has popular support so its less likely.
The Wii U and Xbox One are trapped by their peripherals.
