open platform reduces the incentive for companies to invest especially in the entertainment industry which gaming is a part of.
Even worse yet, as gaming is a hobby rather than a neccesity, its unlikely that any company would replace what the console industry without the incentive of a closed platform. We would see significant downsizing across the board. And lower quality games are bad for the consumer.
In short terms, freedom for consumers limits what some companies can reasonably invest to push the industry further.
