I'm not American, so all I can do is speculate. But I would have a feeling that guns are so ingrained in American culture that if they were banned there would be a massive black market of gun smugglers and distributors, kinda like prohibition era. People might even start producing their own guns like they did booze, and they would be even more unsafe than regular guns.
