Looking at VGChartz numbers, I can only assume that Tropical Freeze and 3D World were responsible for the Wii U's rise in Britain. Also, it's interesting that those two titles have outsold the various bundled Wii U games in the UK thus far in 2014. I guess that would technically make 3D Mario and Donkey Kong Country games system sellers. Edit: Oops, misread a chart.
As for the 3DS, this is obviously the work of Pokemon X/Y, which VGChartz says sold over 50% as much as 3DS hardware did in 2014. Of course, other casual releases this past year such as Animal Crossing and Mario Party also did very well. In fact, other than Zelda and Bravely Default, the 3DS seems to have made a niche in the UK as a decent "casual" platform.
And just because this still bothers me: Aliens: Colinial Marines is still doing pretty well in the UK, despite flopping about a year ago. The 360 version is at #38, ahead of any Wii U games. And no, I'm never going to forgive or forget this.
So maybe Nintendo isn't doing great in the UK, but at least it's doing better than a year ago, despite the greater number of doom articles in recent months.
