The Kievan Rus is no predecessor for the Ukraine. It has no continual development into the modern Ukraine. The Kievan Rus on the other hand is the predecessor of modern Russia. So the roots of Russia are in Kiev? Actually the Kievian Rus started to have Nowgorod as capital, the southern part was later conquered.
