Kinect is essentially a gamble with the Casuals, its high risk as it will drive up the price of the console regardless of the manufacturing cost, because only MS makes the tech. But it can be high reward, but it has missed the Fad so it is unlikely it will pay off.
However, Microsoft probably cut the kinect eventually, once the system has peaked, they've sold consoles without hdds and without wifi the Kinect is not more integral than these 2, but I doubt a 2-5 mil console gap would matter all that much to them, or at least enough to drop the Kinect prematurely.
