Saving the Wii U is relatively simple: Price cut the Tablet controller, Overhaul the Nintendo Network integrating it with the 3DS, buy more development studios to work on rereleases and older IPs, Advertise as a games platform and put advertisement into exclusive Wii U games, get advertising deals with games retailers. Get deals with mobile platforms, to get Nintendo Apps on phones and tablets.
Nintendo is the only manufacturer that cares more about hardware rather than software, thus in order to move more hardware they need to increase demand which can be done with better advertising and a wider variety of games. E.G Nintendo is basically sitting on a Titanfall level exclusive in Metroid...but they would probably have to ruin some parts of the game to give it mass appeal. At the same time, all Metroid would have to do is add COD multiplayer, not tacked on but well developed and it could do both, but it mandates that Nintendo stop its online network facade and just outsource there infrastructure to Google, Apple, or Microsoft.
