Thats actually a decent question...

I can say that it has no correlation to what D21 said (overproduction) and I can add that for the system itself, a portion of the cost goes to the retailer and there are also costs such as marketing and R&D consider when discussing the "cost" of a system. Additionally there are costs associated with the upkeep of a company from currency exchange to property upkeep that makes the picture more complicated than how much it costs to make a product vs how much you make selling the product.

EDIT: This is not the place for a "Should Nintendo Drop the Gamepad" debate. That discussion has been had many times elsewhere and I personally don't feel like getting into in every Nintendo related thread...
