People will kick and scream about it (well Nintendo fans) but I think the move has been made internally so that Zelda U, Mario Galaxy 3, and Animal Crossing U will be pan-platform titles for Nintendo ... meaning they'll release on Wii U but also another Nintendo hardware platform that's coming (probably sooner than people think). A portable one.

They are not going to let such high profile/expensive to develop projects simply rot so that 15 million Nintendo fans are happy when the sales potential for such games is much larger than that.

They did it with Gamecube.

To be honest times are more dire now than the GameCube days. The Wii U sells worse than the GameCube, and the 3DS is selling worse than the GBA at equivalent time points in their life cycles. 3DS may already actually be on a decline, and the Wii U seems like a coma patient that wakes up for a day or two before flat lining again. Software development is more expensive.

As much as Nintendo fans try to put lipstick on this pig, something here is going to have to give.
