Proof please? We have no way of knowing how anything would be doing in the absence of Nintendo Directs and the 3DS turnaround refutes your point just as much as lackluster Wii U sales support it.
But how exactly could you think that less promotion would be better in any way? I don't get why people think Nintendo Directs are "failing". Like I said before, its pretty much free advertising as well as over 20K people tuning into each one (according to streaming site during all the NDs I've watched) and plenty more seeing the info on gaming sites afterwards.
NDs are not a replacement of convential advertisement, they are a supplement and in my opinion, do their job quite well. You just need to realize what exactly they are trying to do...
