Sounds like me, although I got my WiiU last year because I was moving, didn't want to buy an old Wii and decided to invest on the new platform. I used it as a Wii machine for 4 months (with some NintendoLand on the side), and it did perfectly fine although with some kinks (I would have liked a better integrated backwards compatibility). I think it was April that I bought my first WiiU titles, with NSMBU and NAN; those together to NintendoLand showed me stuff that was not possible on the Wii.

Also, aren't the OS updates already installed in the new SKUs? And I agree that updates should be pushed in the background by default, and with the newer OS it is possible to download and install on the background, even while the console is on standby.
And has that summer/winter update been released yet? The one that was supposed to increase the speed even further than that spring update did.
