If the cost to port game to the wii u is higher than possible returns then can you really blame them?

Yes when it only cost Ubisoft 1m Euros to port Assassin's Creed III. The games he's listed above would have made a profit on the Wii U, no doubt in my mind about that.

Two things:

1: AC 3 is a 7th gen only game and can be more or less directly ported to the PowerPC and similar generation shader models etc on the Wii U's hardware, this is not the case with the other two 8th gen consoles; they have an entirely different CPU die.

2: There is a difference between a semi-late or late direct port and actual simultaneous multiplatform development, the cost is much higher.

It basically boils down to this; as the gen progresses and the developer focus shifts more and more over to the PS4/One/PC combo, the coding will be less and less likely to be fitted to the Wii U's hardware, this transitional period we're seeing between generations is as good as it gets. It will basically become a choice of either releasing a game at full cost in development and retail pricing for an unproven audience and a likely loss or releasing a later port with the added risk of selling a lot less and the inevitable mark down in retail price, making each unit bring less revenue, ultimately very likely offsetting most of the savings along with the decreased sales.

This is not a good position to be in for developers, most bigger budget multiplatform titles simply won't find their way to the Wii U simply because the vast majority of developers won't see any kind of value in it. Nintendo choose, yet again, to be the odd man out and release hardware tailor made to their own software and not much else; they are basically trying to dictate to a great extent how 3rd parties should work, this is a horrible, horrible tactic if they ever want proper support and this is 100% poor strategy from the venerable Japanese giant. This is getting old; people need to stop it with the ridiculous excuses on Nintendo's behalf and recognize the fact that they make mistakes like everyone else, and what's worse; they make the same one over and over in this case.

Nintendo does not need overzealous fans that condone their every action and defend their every misstep; they need their core fans to tell them they're screwing up and need to come out of their shell. Or; their fans should just accept that there won't be any support so long as Nintendo insists on presenting divisive and/or unreasonable and selfish developer environments. They are still paying the price for how they've treated and viewed 3rd parties for three decades. Of course, people will go on refusing to realize this, or at the very least; refuse to admit it.
