On the 3''-display of the 2DS or 3DS you need a stylus to be precise. On the resistive 4.2''-display of the 3DS XL, a stylus is a bit more precise than using the fingers, because you have to put some pressure on the area you want to activate... but the stylus-advance gets smaller.
A 4.2''-display with capacitive touchscreen allows more precision than a resistive 4.2''-display, since you only have to tip the area, not to tip AND put pressure on that area. It works fine on every 4'' - 5'' smartphone.
