I think its fine...there have been times in games (albeit never a mario game) where I've become stuck and just got all the fun sucked out of playing for me, to the point where playing the game was just a chore until I could finally beat the stage and just move on. If I became too stuck, I would simply stop playing the game...for a very long time. While I personally wouldnt use an item like this (too proud or something) I can see its appeal if it helps people get past the sections they don't think are fun and back to the sections they do think are fun. After all, at the end of the day, the point of playing a game like mario is to have fun and if you are a kid stuck on one level for a week, the game stops being fun.
I see where hes coming from about removing the challenge in games but if you are the type of person who loves over coming tough challenges, simply don't use the item and if you are a kid who over uses the item, well you just suck in general, its not the game's fault

EDIT: to answer the poll question, no, i think he approached this in a pretty crappy, argumentative way that made him come off as a jerk instead of being a sincere guy with an opinion
