i think people who are saying that the WiiU is a generation behind in power compared to the 4One like the Wii was to the PS360 are nuts, for several reasons.

1. PS360 engines couldn't run on the Wii, games like Call Of Duty had to be rebuilt from the ground up for the Wii in order to be ported.

the 4One enigines are very scalable, if they most of those can run on the PS360, then they sure as hell can run on the more powerful WiiU.

2.the PS360 jump in power over the PS2Xbox was very big, and in order for that to be achieved, MS and Sony had to put very high prices and take very big losses on the hardware, which took a long time to recoup. Sony started profiting in freaking 2011! and i don't even know if MS turned a profit yet.

this time around, the jump in power is the smallest one yet, about 3-6 times more powerful than their predecessors, and this generation also lasted the longest, so you'd think that the jump would actually be bigger. also, the consoles are much more cheaply manufactered now, and the losses are small (PS4, the strongest next gen console, is sold at 400$ and at a 60$ dollar loss, which is nothing compared to the 200+$ dollar loss the PS3 made).

3.Diminishing Returns, this photo sums up what i'm getting at pretty well:

combine this with the fact that the jump in power is smaller.

4.if Crysis 3, and more recently Metal Gear Solid 5, which are some of the finest games we've seen yet, can run on the PS360, which have very dated architectures, DX9/equilivants, and a tiny 256 MB of RAM, you can understand that most if not all PS4/Xbox One games can run on the WiiU with some optimizations.

so, what do we understand from all this? we understand that the WiiU and XboxOne/PS4 gap is nowhere near as drastic as the Wii to PS360 gap, but more like the PS2 to GameCube/Xbox gap.

correct. if we look at raw power alone, ps360 were 20+ times stronger than wii AND had modern resources (wii didn't even have programable shaders). for the same difference to occur, the wii u would have to be as powerfull as an overcloked 360 and ps4/xone would have to be 20+ times better.

the reality many refuse to accept: ps4 and xone are 7x and 5x more powerfull than their predecessors. that alone already reduces the difference by A LOT. a good guess puts wii u between 2.5x and 3x more powerfull than ps360 while having all modern resources that ps4 and xone have. the difference from wii vs ps360 was ONLY reduced by about 10x.

And to the user who said diminishing returns only apply to polygons, don't say such nonsense. we can only have so much with graphics in general. there's a point (that was already reached) where it takes much more power and resources to make something look slightly better. just look at the specs difference for PCs to run THE SAME GAME at low, medium, high, ultra.
