I think the idea that one console "ends" the previous console kinda has to change anyway.
It was valid in the 90s/2000s, but things have changed, there are different ways of moving forward especially now with digital distribution.
When a new iPad comes out, people don't throw a fit because all their old apps won't be supported or they have to buy the new iPad just to use new apps.
