?The first game in the Shin Megami Tensei series practically invented the monster catching mechanic (Megami Tensei for the NES). They have similairties and Pokemon can be hard if you play competitive! The story and such of course is totally different, lots of hardcore stuff in Shin Megami Tensei. But both of them consist in cathing monsters and use them to fight others, they even have a weakness system where if you hit the correct weakness you do more damage.

Gameplay wise they are quite similar.

I just think that monster catching isn't enough to compare both games, as it's only a small part of two games that have a complex gameplay.
