The main issue with the PS3 was fairly easy to fix as time went on though -- it just needed a price cut, and then it basically was the direct successor to the PS2. 

The Wii U will never be the successor to the original Wii phenomenon in the same way because it doesn't have a controller that generates the same level of excitement. 

That's a fairly big difference. Wii U is basically the GameCube all over again.
