Indeed, Sony's marketting push in Europe during the PS and PS2 eras was astounding. I'm not sure about the PS3 era since I haven't been to Europe in a while, but that kind of effort doesn't fade away quickly regardless.
That is one of the points of Sony that I respect most. They pushed games into a different sphere of acceptance, mostly thanks to simulation games (GT, and EA's Fifa) and excellent marketting back in the day.
