You called them important. In reality the majority really aren't that important.
Many people bought these in huge packs with other indie games during Steam deals or for a dollar during a Humble Bundle sale.
The market is still tiny compared to the other big studio releases. Hell the whole market (on PC) is smaller than this generation's FIFA.

Would you agree that Angry Birds is bigger than Mario (and thus the biggest franchise of all time) ?
Because AFAIK it has sold (not counting the free versions) more, so obviously it's more important to consumers.
